'll start off with simple checks you can make on your character, and then move onto some common problems that you may face when constructing and testing your PI. Not all of these may apply if you are working on a specialty or exotic PI, but they will assist with all of the normal PIs. Check the bottom of the post if you need clarifying on some of the terms I use.

Easy Checks

~ Make sure you have Damage Reduce 255% atleast once somewhere on the character

~ Ensure you have Non-Class Prayer as your Right-Hand skill

~ Make sure your Mana Regeneration is capped for whichever Mana value you are using. Lower manas require more Mana Regen to reach the cap than high manas.

~ Check to see that your Telekenisis level is 31 or higher and also that your Energy Shield is of a high enough level to absorb the maximum 95% of damage.

~ Make sure your prayer aura is healing a reasonable amount.

~ Check that you have all of the pieces required to complete the Set if you are building with Set items

~ Be sure to add the attributes "NV Curse Resist, NV Dodge, NV Evade and NV Avoid" at least once. These will protect you from a long list of deadly skills and spells.

~ Lastly, design your character to use 1.21 million or higher Mana. Values less than 1,217,925 will be especially weak to any character using capped Smite & Thorns

Troubleshooting

My PI is popping to smite

- You may not have appropriate DTM% for your PI. You can check how much it regenerates by adding up your total Damage to Mana% and plug it into Tan's calculator, or alternatively use the formula. Please note that this formula assumes you are using capped DR%, and being struck by capped Smite damage.
Formula: (35,652 - Damage Reduce) x Damage to Mana

Eg. Character with 8,000 Damage Reduce and 295% Damage to Mana: (35,652 - 8,000) x 2.95 = 81,575 Onscreen Mana regenerated. It is noteworthy that 1 capped smite against a typical PI will take away 84,672.5 Onscreen Mana.

- Check that you don't have too much Prayer Strength for the Mana value you are using. A low mana with extremely strong Prayer can fall victim to popping because of the huge amount of Mana consumed by Prayer. If you suspect this is a problem you can do one of 2 things to lower your prayer. Firstly removing Prayer sources (active parts, AKA items with prayer #99 as the highest aura skill #), and secondly by lowering the overall level of Prayer.

- If you are using a low mana with Stun, thorns is likely tearing your PI apart, so remove the stun and test again to see if it improves your PI.

My PI is popping to a specific aura

- Whether your PI is dying to an aura that it shouldn't be dieing to, or you want to counter a specific aura these fixes can potentially solve your problem.

- First make sure that you place Absorbs BoCL on everything you can, and add Absorbs 127% for each element once. Whatever PI you are building, it will benefit overall from having as much absorbs as possible. If you are using positive resists, keep them at 75, going higher is limiting the elemental damage you could be absorbing from, and 75 resist is fully capable of surviving any aura kill, or combination of kill auras as long as you have proper absorbs. If you are using negative resists be aware that they are naturally, and inevitably weak to extremely high elemental damage.

- Every Mana value will have an inherent weakness to a specific aura. This aura will cause just enough damage to bring your mana pool to the moving 0 without any extra elemental damage, and allow incoming Smite and/or Thorns to hit your character without any reduction from Energy Shield. There are a couple things you can do, but they will alter your PI dynamic, simply changing what aura damage will hit you best, so if you're dying to a common aura then it may be worth it to change your PI.

- Incease or decrease your Mana value. Decreasing it will allow some extra damage to pass to your life, and hopefully allow you to absorb enough to survive. Increasing the mana can provide you with a large enough mana pool that you will avoid the double hit all together. Prayer will be your main source of regenerating HP in this case.

- Increase or decrease your DTM. This is more of a gamble and will require you to test a number of different values to find whichever suits you best. Lowering the DTM will leave you with less mana in the pool at the time of an aura hit, potentially allowing you to absorb more. Decreasing DTM too far may result in pops against high physical damage. Increasing the DTM will generate an increased amount of mana in the mana pool, and acts similar to increasing your total mana, but comes with it's own advantages/disadvantages. Too much DTM will cause pops on any mana, especially high manas very close to 1,572,863. High DTM may also cause low manas to pop, absorb erratically, or not absorb at all.

Every PI will have a unique amount of DTM that will amount to too much, but a reliable DTM can normally be found between 250% to 500%.

- Lastly, you may need to alter the Prayer Strength on your PI if none of the above techniques are working. If your prayer draws too much mana you are going to pass well below that moving 0, and intake far more damage from the double hit that you can regain from Prayer and absorbs.

Good luck, and please post your questions/concerns.
